“A Day in the Life at Canuck Palms”

It’s our last full day in Exuma. I can’t believe the trip is almost over! We have a lot to do before we fly out tomorrow. The morning is spent preparing the house, fixing the fence, cleaning windows, replacing light bulbs and washing floor mats. The work never ends at Canuck Palms!

Heather and I finally sit down around 1 o’clock and have a kalik on the back deck. We wait for Cynthia our property manager to drop over for a meeting.

Hanging out on the back deck

Cynthia arrives around 2pm. We talk about upcoming guests and the great work Cynthia and her team do for us. We have a great working relationship and we are very lucky to have her with us. Heather gives Cynthia a new outfit and a toy for her grandson.

Once Cynthia leaves Heather and I take off to town to grab a couple things. We stop into Top 2 Bottom in Georgetown and purchase a new flashlight, smoke detector, bbq lighter and first aid kit.

Heather and I meet our good friend Wade for a drink at Club Peace and Plenty. The weather couldn’t be better!

We arrive home and Chase wants to go fish at Emerald Bay on his last night. We drive up the road and fish for about an hour. Heather and I relax in our beach chairs and watch the sun set.

Emerald Bay

Chase practices with his cast net in the creek. Heather videos Chase for his YouTube channel just before we leave. Four potcakes remember Chase from last trip and follow him around everywhere he goes.

We spend the rest of the night packing and doing laundry. I make pasta and salad for dinner. I have my last outdoor shower and continue to pack for tomorrow. We watch a movie on the couch and listen to the waves. We keep the windows open to feel the amazing island breeze.

Tomorrow we are up early to catch the Bahamas Air flight at 950. Heather and I agree that this week has gone by extremely fast! 🛫🛫

As we sit on the back deck with our morning coffee the clouds start to pass over and it begins to rain. We can’t complain, the weather has been amazing this week. This rain will also do the new flowers and palm trees well.

After breakfast Heather and I drive to AID for light bulbs and take a tour through Moss Town. We also stop at Prime Island Meats in Hoopers Bay for cauliflower, bacon, and top sirloin steaks. I fill the rental car up with gas near the airport.

Its around 2 o’clock when we arrive back at the house. It’s still cloudy and doesn’t look like it’s going to pass. We pack up the car and decide to drive towards Baraterre to fish. We spend a couple of hours fishing at the bridge and catch a few White Grunts.

The Baraterre bridge

Filming Chase for his YouTube channel.

We end the day driving to the Baraterre dock and see some of the tour boats coming in. I remember when we were here years ago when we took the Four C’s boat tour to see the swimming pigs. It starts to pour rain and everyone is making a run for their cars.

Baraterre

We stop at Emerald Bay on our way home so Chase can film another episode for his fishing YouTube channel. Tonight he was showing his viewers how to properly throw a cast net. We arrive home and get settled. Heather and I have a beer and I start to think about getting dinner ready. All of a sudden the power goes out. Unfortunately this happens on the island sometimes if there’s a wind storm. Hopefully it won’t be out too long. In the meantime Heather and Chase enjoy playing some board games.

We find some candles, and I manage to cook steaks, cauliflower, and peas in the dark on the bbq. We have a fantastic candlelight dinner at the breakfast bar.

Around 9pm the power comes back on. We relax on the couch, I start our blog, and Heather corresponds with some potential guests wanting to book later this month.

I can’t believe tomorrow is our last full day! We plan on going to Chat n Chill on Stocking Island if it is nice weather. Heather is wanting to try the mushroom cheese burger at Augusta Bay as well! 🍔🍔🍔

We wake up a little earlier because we need to get to town to meet the boat. We ordered a new patio umbrella for the back deck from Kelly’s in Nassau. After breakfast we head out towards town shortly after 9.

We arrive at the Government dock and are told the boat is coming in late due to weather in Nassau. They tell us to be back after 130. I’m good with killing some time….I’m craving a meat lovers omelette from Augusta Bay!

We grab our usual table. Chase gets his casting net from the car and heads down to the beach. What a view. We try to make it to Augusta Bay for breakfast every trip. After breakfast Heather and Chase take in the view from the dock. They watch two baby sea turtles swim around the bay.

View at Augusta Bay

We drive west back towards the house and stop at AID for glasses, shower curtains and some other supplies. We also stop at Darville Lumber for a fire extinguisher, and Exuma Building Supplies to get our propane tank filled.

Chase is dying to jump into the water somewhere so we pull off the road at the east end of Tar Bay. We grab our beach chairs and the Go Pro out of the car. The colour of the water is incredible.

Tar Bay 😍😍😍

Around 1245 we make our way back to town and pick up our new umbrella at the dock. We are excited to see what it looks like. We drive straight back to the house, wanting to spend the majority of the afternoon at our beach.

We get home and set up the umbrella on the back deck. Amazing!

New umbrella!

Heather and Chase pack up the beach bag and chairs and walk to the beach. I drive around the corner to Tracy Bowes Convenience Store and grab milk, cheese and windex, and stock up on kalik at the liquor store. I meet Heather and Chase down at the beach. They are both out in the middle of the reef snorkeling. Its perfect….. so calm!

Path to the beach

Exuma Blue 💧🌊💧🌊

Chase and I snorkel the reefs… we are so lucky to have two great reefs so close to the house. We see a stingray, barracuda, snapper, and several other fish. I was able to capture a great Go Pro video of the stingray.

Snorkeling the reefs

Chase fly fishes just off shore for about an hour and I grab the other fishing gear from the house. We manage to catch two Horse Eyed Jacks. We see the big barracuda swim by a few times…. probably our same friend from last trip at Christmas.

Chase fly fishing

As the sun sets we all have our showers. We have dinner at the breakfast bar and watch the sailboats go by off in the distance. I make Heather a rum punch with her favorite Ricardo Coconut Rum. Heather answers a booking inquiry and Chase uploads some new video to his “Chasin Lunkers” YouTube channel.

We are hoping to stay at our beach tomorrow. If its calm we will be paddleboarding, snorkeling and fishing! 🌴☀️🌴☀️

Our plan today is to hopefully get to one beach for the entire afternoon. We relax on the back deck with a coffee and I make eggs for breakfast. Chase cooks his own pancakes.

Morning coffee with a view…

Enjoying the back deck

Our gardener drops over to install a new water tap on the exterior of the house. We spend some time getting the water shut off at the road, and finally get it installed. This will help when it comes time to water the new plants and palm trees that we planted recently.

Early afternoon we take off west towards Rolleville in search of a secluded beach for the day.

Missed this place

We unload the car and set up the beach chairs. As usual, Heather and Chase walk way out across the sandbar to explore. It’s no surprise that we are the only ones here…..typical Exuma.

Exploring the sandbars….

I pump up the “Red Paddle” SUP board for Heather and Chase grabs the fly rod. I open up a kalik and relax in the shade enjoying the best view in the world.

Wow

In search of the ghosts of Exuma….. the bonefish….

Chase SUP boards around the sandbars, and Heather and I set up the beach chairs and umbrella on a sandbar way out in the middle of the ocean. This is the most peaceful thing ever. We have a kalik, and remind ourselves that we are the luckiest people in the world. We could sit here all week!

I’m staying forever

I grab my fly rod and walk across the sandbar in search of bonefish. I’m determined to get one, even though they are hard to find. I spend about an hour wading through the clear Exuma waters, and only see two bonefish!

Doesn’t get any better

Chase fishes east of us and sees some sharks and barracuda. I catch a crab…that’s about it! We decide to pack up our stuff as the sun sets. We want to drop by Exuma Point for a drink on our way home.

Amazing

We drive up the road and stop into Exuma Point for a drink. There are a few cars and a handful of people at the beach bar. Heather has a Kalik Mango Radler, I have a Kalik Light, and Chase has a white milk. We take in the view and enjoy the breeze.

Exuma Point!

We arrive home and I continue with my nightly routine….. outdoor shower with a glass of wine. I relax with Heather in our lounge chairs and do some social media posts. I make burgers on the outdoor bbq and grilled cheese for Chase. The night is perfect.

Time to relax …..

Tomorrow is a big day. We have to get to the boat at the Government dock in the morning to pick up our new umbrella that we had shipped from Nassau. We may also be renting a boat for the day to explore Elizabeth Harbour!! ☀️☀️☀️

The clocks went forward last night, so 7 am is actually 8am. I absolutely love coffee on the back deck listening to the waves and the birds.

Our electrician Glen popped over around 10 am and installed a new exterior light. We hang out at the house for the morning and relax on the back deck… listening to Kenney Chesney and Jimmy Buffet.

We see the Air Canada flight fly over on it’s way to the airport. I decide I better slide around the corner to Tracy Bowes Convenience store and grab some more food for tonight. I drive to the store and buy milk, onion, lettuce, tomato and pasta.

Heather and I walk to the beach and enjoy the amazing weather.

Walking the beach at Canuck Palms

We pack up the car and make our way to Flamingo Beach at Paradise Bay….. one of our favorites!

Flamingo Beach

We spend a couple of hours here playing volleyball and swimming. This beach is one of our favorites on the island. It’s always calm.

Around 430 we drive back east and stop at nearby Grand Isle Resort to see our friend Emmerson and to have an early dinner. We also bump into our friend Roger who also works at the resort.

Chase finds his long time buddy Emmerson.

We stop into the new 23 Degrees North beach club and Restaurant. It’s a beautiful spot. We want to have lunch but you have to be over 18. We head back and enjoy lunch at Palapa Grill. Chase enjoys a burger, I have a chicken ceaser salad, and Heather has chips and quacamole.

We arrive back at the house shortly after 530 and pack the cooler for the beach. Chase wants to wave jump and try his cast net. The weather is perfect. We spend the next hour and a half enjoying the beach near the house.

Wave jump time!!

Chase gets some good use out of his cast net.

I cant wait for my nightly routine…. outdoor shower, bath robe, wine on the deck with music.

Canuck Palms gardens 😍😍

We relax on the couch after the sun goes down and watch a movie. It’s been a perfect day. I do some social media for the business and we think about what we want to do tomorrow. Chase wants to shark fish in Rolleville. Heather wants to relax at Cocoplum Beach. I want to fly fish for bonefish!!!

We didn’t stray very far from the house today. We start the day off with a coffee on the back deck while Chase continues to sleep on the couch. Although the villa has an entire 2nd bedroom and bathroom, Chase enjoys sleeping on the couch and falling asleep while he watches tv.

Heather and I go down to the beach for our morning walk. The waves are big and they crash onto the shore. It’s a beautiful morning. On our way back we stop to say hi to our friends next door.

After our walk Chase makes pancakes and I make us eggs. We decide to stay close to the house today and relax. Heather moves some furniture around and hangs up our new curtains. They look amazing!

New curtains!

We pack up the beach tent, cooler, and beach chairs and walk to the beach. It’s windy, but the waves will be so much fun! Heather and I set up the beach tent, and Chase explores the water.

Relaxing in the beach tent

Heather and Chase jump waves for close to an hour while I have a kalik and read my book “HUNGRY….Fuelling Your Best Game” by Ryan Walter..

Loving my book!

Shortly after 4 o’clock we pack up our things and return to the house. Chase wants to go fish at Emerald Bay. We pack the car a short time later and head up the road. Chase and I spend a couple of hours fly fishing.

First cast on the fly rod

Chase uses his cast net and catches some small bait fish that he will use this week.

Great form while casting his net!

We stop into Tracy Bowes Convenience Store and buy more milk, lettuce, onion, cheese and a tomato. We get home just in time to catch the sunset! I have a great outdoor shower, and throw on my “Gluckstein Home” bath robe. Heather and I enjoy wine and a rum punch, and take some pictures of the sunset amongst the palm trees.

Exuma Sunsets

We make pasta and salad for dinner, and finish the night watching the Maple Leafs play Edmonton on TV!

I’m excited for tomorrow even though I have no idea what we are doing. Its Sunday…… maybe the pig roast at Chat n Chill!?

Airplane views and Exuma Blues….

We are up at 3 am to drive to Pearson Airport. We are flying Air Canada to Nassau, then island hopping to Exuma on Bahamas Air. Can’t wait to get out of the cold!

We had about 5 hours in between flights so we took a cab to Compass Point Resort for lunch. This resort used to be a music studio owned by music producer Chris Blackwell of Island Records. Famous musicians recorded albums there in the 80’s, including U2, ACDC, Bob Marley, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones! So much history!

A kalik and an amazing view!

We grab our flight just before 6pm and make the short half hour flight over the beautiful Exuma Cays and quickly arrive in Exuma.

Even when its cloudy and close to dark the Exumas are still beautiful

We land just after 630 and walk across the road to Airport Car Rental after getting our luggage. It was nice that they stayed open until we arrived so that we could pick up our Toyota Carolla.

We drive straight to Tracy Bowes Convenience store just around the corner from Canuck Palms. We pick up pasta, cheese, hot dogs, water, bread and juice. We also bought squid for Chase to fish with.

We love walking into the house when we first arrive. Cynthia and her team do a wonderful job keeping the house so clean! We unpack and get settled in. I make Heather a rum punch, and I pour a glass of white wine. We do our nightly “walk about” around the property and admire how big the palm trees are getting. We also notice how amazing the gardens look! Our gardener has done all the gardens in top soil and mulch! Also a great surprise…. two new palm trees!

We relax on the couch and watch a movie before we turn in early. Can’t wait to sleep in those new Vera Wang sheets!

We get up early and relax on the back deck with a coffee. We have some running around to do today. Around 830 we head out towards town looking forward to breakfast. We drop into BTC and top up some minutes on the house cell phone. We finally get to Club Peace and Plenty for breakfast. The view is amazing!

Club Peace and Plenty

Heather has eggs benedict, Chase has his favorite pancakes, and I have a romo omelette. While we enjoy the morning, Heather corresponds with our guests that were here last week.

Work with a view. Heather corresponds with our recent guests.

Chase playing the “Bimini Ring Toss” game.

We walk back towards Exuma Market. I pop into the liquor store and buy some kalik mango radlers and a case of kalik light. Heather runs into the grocery store and grabs milk, pop, and fruit punch. We then make our way to Exuma Building Supplies for water, then pay our electrical bill at Bahamas Power and Light Company. Heather walks next store to Prime Island Meats and finds hamburgers, salad dressing, lettuce, cucumber and bacon.

We arrive back to the house around 1230. Its beach time!! Chase gets his fishing equipment ready and I pack the cooler and the beach bag. I take care of a couple business phone calls while Heather and Chase walk to the beach. They enjoy a quick swim, play beach volleyball, and go for a run to get their daily cardio fix.

When Heather and Chase return we drive a short distance up the road to Emerald Bay ❤❤💧. Chase runs over to the creek in an attempt to see the large tarpon that he missed catching in December. The water is stunning!

Emerald Bay

Chase grabs his fishing gear and runs off to fish in the creek. Heather and I set up the beach chairs, table and beach umbrella. I cant wait to sit and just stare at that Exuma Blue!! 💧💧🌊🌊

Beer Time!

Casting his cast net to catch bait

First fish on the fly rod

We see Chase fishing with one of the local kids. He’s having a great time. He yells over…. “Dad it’s Trevor!!” Chase had finally found his friend Trevor that he has hung out with so many times over the past couple of years.

Chase finally bumps into his friend Trevor again!

We take Trevor to his house to get changed and drive to Big D’s for a drink. The kids play on the beach and snorkel while Heather and I have a beer. Chase hangs out with some of the local kids and tells stories of how cold it is in Canada, and how much snow we have! ❄❄

We drop Trevor at home and get back to the house before dark. Our gardener has finished off the gardens…. they look amazing! We all have showers and I get dinner ready…..pasta, salad and hamburgers.

We finish off the night watching a family movie together. Big plans for tomorrow…. Cocoplum Beach?! Chat n Chill!? Maybe Rolleville!? 🌴🌴
